Punting for Bunting

A summer jubilee!!...what could be better than getting your Union Jack tableware out, picnic feasts complete with sweet sinful dough-laden feasts, mad Englishmen (see note about canine friends),cucumber sandwiches, tombolas, village fetes (ever heard the one about the man-eating chicken?) and bunting...
Talking of bunting, re-fangled traipsed out to the lovely market town of Great Dunmow to meet a lovely friend who owns an alladin's cave of haberdashery http://www.lloydwaters.co.uk .
We decide to meet at her home, and she's joyfully unravelling a mass of colour as I pull around into the sunshine-sprinkled driveway...you see,Carol had this mad idea of getting the town to knit jubilee bunting.well, who'd have thought there were so many knitters in Dunmow! So each evening, she's been stringing out these little beauties and I've gotta say, she's made a splendid job of it,hoorah Carol!
we carefully drape the bunting over the red beetle before going indoors for java induced tattle-tale.
Now I'm always awestruck by her gorgeous home,a real aesthete's dream...retro,organic,full of love and rock-cakes.If I could live in her g-plan cupboard I'd be the happiest bunny around. As for now,I'm perfectly happy to sit on her Nikki McWilliams oreo cushions http://www.nikkimcwilliams.com/,talk shop and thumb through 70s Vogues (and painfully relive my mutton-sleeve lace dressed childhood eurghhh).!
Eventually, I spy a framed picture of...holy heck is that a knitted likeness of her Majesty??!I am slowly beginning to get the enormity of this project Carol's taken on as she delves into detail; the 90 year old gold-thread fabric done for the King's coronation in 1937 by the Royal School of Needlework http://www.royal-needlework.org.uk/ that Lloywaters has recently leased, the entire royal family knitted by Kathleen, her knitting guru...and the painstaking dedication of her customers to her 'knit-a-thon'.

I am completely inspired and come away with a bag of wool...next step, learn to knit,no REALLY this time :)
I shall be producing evidence of this if ever I finish one...till then enjoy the fab weather and The Queen's Jubilee ,Long Live Her Majesty!etc etc and oh BUY BRITISH!

ps: the canine thing...don't forget to stick a bit of Noel Coward on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPnJM3zWfUo&noredirect=1
